Joe Johnson & Steph Patacsil at an event

Those who knew Joe Johnson knew him as a kind, generous man with a heart for his community. He served as a United Way Board Member, Chair of the Town & Country Division of the campaign, and in many other capacities. As the 2012 Campaign Chair, he led the efforts to achieve the highest campaign in our United Way’s history.

When Chris Armstrong first started at United Way in 2016, Joe told her that he wanted to be done with Chairing the Town and Country Division. Chris insisted that he stay…just one more year. That one more year turned into several more years, showing Joe’s commitment to our organization.

Joe was genuine and spoke from the heart. One of his slogans during his campaign was “Live United! It’s the right thing to do.” He lived out those words and inspired others to be part of something greater than themselves.

Sadly, Joe passed away on December 27, 2024. The Joe Johnson Legacy of Impact Award was created to recognize his many years of service to United Way of Cass County.

Lloyd at a conference

Lloyd R. Knight, the first recipient of the award, has served our organization in many roles as well. Lloyd was the 2022 Campaign Chair, has served on our board and various committees, and led the Industry and Labor Division for several years.

Like Joe, Lloyd has a big heart and has made a lasting impact on our community. He has been involved in so many things, because when you say “Hey Lloyd” he doesn’t say no! He has a costume for every occasion and has put many to use helping fundraise.

Lloyd knows no stranger and became famous at a United Way conference during his year as the Campaign Chair. He unknowingly met the keynote speaker and ended up in the keynote's speech later that day!

United Way of Cass County has had many incredible volunteers over the years, and we are grateful to have been impacted by these two great men!
